. . . Something To Think About. . .

Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approx. 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.
The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.
A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.
A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children.. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly..
The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.
He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.
This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities.
*In a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?
*Do we stop to appreciate it?
*Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made.

I love this for so many reasons. I like that all the children wanted to stop and listen. They are such pure little souls. It is such a reminder that beauty is everywhere. You might see it, hear it or feel it anywhere at anytime.
Dear John Walker,
Today we had your 15 month check up. You are actually about 15 ½ months old. This is such a fun age. You are discovering everything! You are a pretty passionate, happy kid. When you are happy, which is most of the time, you are all smiles and giggles. When something makes you mad?? Man, you get irritated. It is pretty funny, although you don’t think so of course. You are trying out new words almost daily. You are such a great mimic sometimes.
Favorite foods right now:
Pickles (still your all time favorite)
Hummus
Mustard
Raisins
Broccoli
Oranges
Newest words:
“Hey dude”
“All done”
“John”
“Pretty”
“Outside”
“Five” (I think you are saying 5.. I’m not totally sure about this one)
Oh and you did say “Papa” clear as day a couple weekends ago & Papa was THRILLED!
Sleeping:
Well last week you were IN YOUR CRIB until early morning. You would wake up & want a drink & then back to sleep. BUT… starting 3 days ago you decided you HATE your crib. UGH! Back to the drawing board.
Bath time:
Out of the kitchen sink & into our tub and you LOVE it!
Nap time:
I think we are slowly going down to 1 nap. You have a pretty decent one around 11/11:30, but you just can’t make it to bed time so lately you have been trying to pass out around 6 or 7 which ruins bedtime. Your sleeping is kind of a mess right now. L
New favorite activities:
You finally like me to read to you! It has taken some time, but you started bringing books to me.
Today you got two shots. I was so nervous about it, but your doctor assured me there is nothing to worry about. You have to be up to date on your vaccines by the time Montessori starts (3 months away.. tear..). I don’t want to have you pumped full of vaccines right before, so I have had to try and catch you up. Today you got the MMR (AHAHAH! This one scares me) and chickenpox. You and Nana met me at the doctors. You were so sad after your shots (note to self – don’t make appointments at naptime). It was heartbreaking.
You are such a fun little person. You are the best thing to happen to us and we love you so much!
